“In 1980 I found myself in the high mountains for the first time. I knew right away I belonged to these mountains, that I was destined to be a mountaineer. One encounters special challenges at high altitude. I discovered a new kind of mountaineering, it was not only about the complexity of the route, it was about the human struggle with altitude.
I wanted to achieve something essential in life, something that is not measured by money or position in society. I wanted to respect myself as a man, and I wanted the respect of my friends and family. My fate was to be an athlete. I was born with a certain physical and mental ability…I have tried to use those gifts to realise myself as a human being. The mountains are not stadiums where I satisfy my ambitions to achieve. They are my cathedrals, the houses of my religion. Their presence is grand and pure. I go to them as all human beings go to worship. In their presence I attempt to understand my life, to purify myself of earthly vanity greed and fear. On their alter I try to perfect myself physically and spiritually. From their vantage point I view my past, dream of the future and with unusual acuteness I experience the present. My ascents renew my strength and clear my vision. They are the way I practice my religion. In the mountains I celebrate creation, on each journey I am reborn.”
This quote, by a man regarded as a great mountaineer, catches my breath every time I read it. This quote was shared with me by one of the remarkable women who gave their time to explore the brand of the business I am creating. It captures what we are doing so perfectly. We could easily replace the word mountaineer for entrepreneur. A true entrepreneur cannot argue with their entrepreneurship. The challenges they face, made even more evident the higher the climb, are relentless and extraordinary, and in the face of these challenges, we reach an ever high altitude of perspective and potential.
The great entrepreneur will rarely be primarily motivated by money. They hunger for creativity, for the thrill of the game, for bringing their creation to life. This is their fate. It cannot be rationalised or argued with. Their cathedral is the world of business and creativity. With each creative venture they are reborn.
And in all of this is the requirement for deep growth as a human. With this deep growth comes the ability to see from the highest peak, when most see from ocean level or the foot hills. But like any ascent, it is fraught with trials. To scale the lofty heights take a rare human.
As a life long entrepreneur and an athlete, I know the journey of the quest. I know as well the struggle with altitude. I know the isolation that comes when you have the ability to see in ways few can. I also know that the world desperately needs more people able to work from the highest altitude perspective possible.
My work is committed to the this. To enabling leaders of business to ascend in their own capacity, to have business be the cathedral, a sacred place to bring real value to all of humanity. To engender dignity and respect to all stakeholders.
If you aspire to this then please drop me a note and say hello.
